In 2020, Westwind constructed its Ovid, New York, hatchery as part of a long-term vision to double production capacity and separate setting and hatching across two locations: Interlaken (settery) and Ovid (hatchery). The company recently completed a major upgrade to the Ovid facility, installing fourteen SmartSetPro™ 6 setters. These new setters complement the existing twelve SmartHatchPro™ NF 8 hatchers, further boosting production efficiency, biosecurity, and operational reliability.
The added setter capacity has also enabled Westwind to streamline its workflow. By consolidating the incubation process in Ovid, the company eliminated the need to haul 16-day incubated eggs between Interlaken and Ovid. The Interlaken site now serves as an egg storage facility, with its NatureForm setters repurposed as SPIDES machines—an improvement that enhances supply-chain performance.
This investment builds on last year’s addition of three SmartHatchPro™ NF 8 hatchers, which removed the requirement for immediate cleaning and egg transfers between hatching cycles. Designed with multiple hatcher hallways, the Ovid hatchery delivers significant gains in efficiency and biosecurity while supporting a total production capacity of 10.4 million pullets annually.
Looking ahead, Westwind is expanding its footprint into the Midwest. The company has acquired a 168’ x 220’ building in Macon, Missouri, now being renovated to house twelve SmartSetPro™ 4 setters and eight SmartHatchPro™ NF 8-150 hatchers. Installation began in November 2025 and is on track for completion by year-end - another milestone in Westwind’s strategic growth.
